Domain Bacteria Information
These organisms are generally feared because some are pathogenic and capable of causing disease.
Domain bacteria information. The largest number of bacteria are saprobic meaning that they feed on dead or decaying organic matter. In the late 1970s american microbiologist carl woese pioneered a major change in classification by placing all organisms into three domains eukarya bacteria originally called eubacteria and archaea originally called archaebacteria to reflect the three ancient lines of evolution. Most bacterial species are heterotrophic.
However bacteria are essential to life as some are part of the human microbiota. According to this system the tree of life consists of three domains. Bacteria are classified under the bacteria domain.
The three domain system adds a level of classification the domains above the kingdoms present in the previously used five or six kingdom systems this classification system recognizes the fundamental divide between the two prokaryotic groups insofar as archaea appear to be more closely related to eukaryotes than they are to other prokaryotes bacteria like organisms with no cell nucleus. Bacteria b æ k ˈ t ɪər i ə. Domain bacteria includes the prokaryotes people encounter on an everyday basis.
The name archaebacteria was previously an untested hypothesis about the evolutionary status of the organisms having a type of metabolic ability that seems to be highly suited to the primordial conditions of life on earth. Common noun bacteria singular bacterium are a type of biological cell they constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms typically a few micrometres in length bacteria have a number of shapes ranging from spheres to rods and spirals bacteria were among the first life forms to appear on earth and are present in most of its habitats. These are part of the large group of organisms commonly called bacteria they include the blue green algae cyanobacteria purple sulfur bacteria etc as well as most of the more familiar decomposing and disease causing bacteria.
The prokaryotic organisms that were formerly known as bacteria were then divided into two of these domains bacteria and archaea. There is a superphylum of bacteria called pvc referring to the three members of that superphylum. Non cellular life is not included in this system.
Before its separation the domain archaea was formerly called the domain archaebacteria which is a misnomer since these organisms were not bacteria but belong to a separate clade. That is they acquire their food from organic matter. The first two are all prokaryotic microorganisms or mostly single celled organisms whose cells have no nucleus all life that has a cell nucleus and eukaryotic membrane bound organelles is included in eukarya.
